Big surprises have always been a big part of the state wrestling tournament. The 2015 edition was no different.

There was a Rifle High School wrestler in senior Alex Rivas who, as a No. 15 seed in the 16-wrestler 170-pound bracket, advanced all the way to the semifinal round of the Class 3A State Championships.

There was a pair of kids from Silt who have opted to attend high school at Grand Junction High, with both of them earning high podium finishes in their respective weight classes. One of them — Isaac Rider — finished atop the podium at 138 pounds in the state’s highest classification: Class 5A.

Both Isaac and his younger brother, Josiah, did club wrestling with Myles Wilson of Glenwood Springs, a sophomore who made it to the Class 4A 152-pound title match before falling, 3-2, to Thompson Valley’s Ben Hewson.

The following are images and memories of the Class 5A, 4A and 3A state championships held Feb. 19 through 21 at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
