Rifle’s newest art project, the mural on the corner of Centennial Parkway and Railroad Avenue, is now complete, and all that’s left is for the public to come check it out and enjoy it for years to come. On Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. YouthZone and the Bookcliffs Arts Center will be unveiling the latest mural with the help of the area youth that helped bring it to life.

The mural was created throughout the summer of 2017 by dedicated and enthusiastic Coal Ridge High School, Rifle High School and Grand Valley High School art students, with the guidance of talented local artists and teachers.

This year’s mural, “Back in My Day,” explores the issue of the generation gap and the animosity that can exist between different generations.

“Last year we focused more on how technology consumes our lives,” said Kyra Guerrette, a Rifle High School student. “This year, we decided that since everything about the generation gap is so negative we should focus on the positive.”

The mural focuses on the five current living generations: Silent Generation (mid-1920s-40s), Baby Boomers (mid-1940s-64), Gen X (1965-84), Millennials (1982-96) and Generation Z, and the accomplishments and struggles that each has had to endure. Each has a distinct section of the timeline with simple images that depict iconic moments of each era. Side-by-side, it represents them all coming together.

The project is a joint effort between YouthZone and the Bookcliffs Arts Center in Rifle, made possible by financial support from the Embrey Family Foundation.
