A Halloween-themed display of artistic creations by Rifle High School students was unveiled at the Rifle Branch Library on Friday, Nov. 1.

As part of the monthly First Friday events, the latest Art in the Stacks display, on the tables in the center in the library, are from Ms. Waters’ basic art class, according to Rifle Branch Manager Janine Rose. The project requirements were to read an unfamiliar Brothers Grimm fairy tale, create one scene to interpret and then write about the scene. Students created their interpretations using a cardboard box, a gourd or pumpkin.

Besides those requirements, the students were free to create whatever and however they were inspired.

One student artist on hand for the First Friday opening reception was 9th grader Celeste Urenda, who, along with classmate Emily Bessette, created “Girl Without Hands.”

“We saw some pictures online and made a set based on the pictures,” Urenda said.

Made of cardboard, tissue paper, wire and dried gourds, the piece took about three weeks to finish, she added.

The artistic creations will be on display at the library for two weeks, or until the pumpkins and gourds begin to smell, Rose said.
