Randy Winkler is Rifle’s new mayor, after a newly constituted city council voted by secret ballot to fill the position during a short organizational meeting on Monday, Sept. 16.
Winkler and three new council members – Barbara Clifton, Dirk Myers and Hans Parkinson – were sworn in to office by City Clerk Lisa Cain. The four won four-year terms in the Sept. 10 municipal election.
“I will do the job to the best of my abilities,” Winkler said after the paper ballots were counted by Cain. Former Mayor Jay Miller was also nominated to continue in the post. After switching chairs with Miller, Winkler asked Miller to serve as mayor pro-tem and Miller accepted.
The mayor’s main duties are to run city council meetings, said City Attorney Jim Neu, and represent the city at various meetings and events.
Winkler, 55, moved to Rifle in 2002 when he and his wife, Jody, purchased Micro Plastics. Winkler was first elected to city council in 2009 and earned his second term in this year’s election. Miller served as mayor for the last two years.
Council members also volunteered for various committee and board appointments for the next four years.
