Emily Johnson soccer tournament takes place June 6 and 7
Registration is open for the seventh-annual Emily Johnson Play it Forward 3-on-3 Soccer Tournament, which will be held June 6 and 7 at Gates Soccer Park on Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley campus.
Fifty teams of six players compete on U8 to U18 boys and girls teams as well as co-ed adult teams in both recreational and competitive divisions. The tournament honors the passion of Emily Johnson, a Coal Ridge High School soccer player who was killed in an ATV accident in November 2008.
All proceeds support three scholarships given to local high school seniors in Emily’s name.
Youth sports camps taking place in New Castle
The New Castle Recreation Department is offering a variety of youth sports camps this summer.
A new Multi-Sport Camp for ages 6-12 is being offered from June 8-11, and again from June 29 to July 2. The Lil’ Kickers soccer program for ages 3-5 returns in a camp format from June 15-18, and again from July 6-9. A grass volleyball camp for ages 8-14 takes place from June 22-25, and the Extreme Flag Football Camp for ages 6-12 will be held July 20-23.
Also, a new Introduction to Lacrosse Camp for ages 6-12 will be held July 13-16. For more details, go to http://www.newcastlerec.com.

Practices under way for Defiance Rugby Club
The Defiance Rugby Club has begun preparations for the upcoming season with a regular practice schedule at Glenwood Park in Glenwood Springs.
Defiance, the rugby team in Glenwood Springs, will hold practices at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday at the park. Anyone who is interested in playing is welcome to attend and participate.
The regular season will last from the middle of June until August. Defiance’s season opener takes place at 1 p.m. June 13 against Steamboat Springs at Glenwood Park.

Colorado River Scramble event takes place May 16
Battlement Mesa Golf Club will host the 22nd-annual Colorado River Scramble Golf Tournament, scheduled for May 16 at the golf course.
The event is hosted by the Grand Valley/Parachute Kiwanas Club. The tournament begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Cost is $125 per person, and all proceeds will be dedicated to Kiwanis-sponsored scholarships and programs for youth in the area.
