Rifle chamber members split on recreation center tax

The numbers in a Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce survey taken this summer on the recreation and community center .74 percent sales and use tax Rifle voters overwhelmingly denied in September, show a split on whether the chamber should have taken a stance on the issue.

As chamber President and CEO Frank Ladd explained in July, 28 chamber members said the group should not take a stance, 19 wanted the chamber to support the tax and six wanted the group to oppose the measure.

Ladd said in July that the numbers in the survey would not be released then, so neither side in the issue could use the results in their campaigning.

Other questions asked if a chamber member, their employees or family would use the recreation center, if the tax hike were approved and the facility built. Twenty-three said they would use the center, 29 said their families would and 20 said their employees would use the center.

Most chamber members also said the city parks and recreation department had done an excellent or above average job offering programs since the one-cent sales tax for such uses was passed in 2006. Most members also said the city had done “just about right” in using those dollars to develop parks and recreation facilities.
