Rifle citizens invited to “Discover Re-2” and learn all about their local school district

Have you ever wondered about your local school district? Why teachers teach what they teach and when? What is served as a part of school lunch? Who is your school board member? Where do schools get their funding, and how schools keep students safe?
The Garfield School District Re-2 school board would like to invite the public to see how its school district is operated, how decisions are made, where school funding comes from and where it goes.
Beginning in August, “Discover Re-2” will give community members a unique opportunity to participate in an in-depth, year-long learning experience.
As a member, you will go “behind the scenes” in the district and meet the people who are responsible for leading and implementing strategic education initiatives in our district.
Participants will observe high quality instruction in district classrooms and learn firsthand about operations that make teaching and learning possible every day, including transportation, safety and security, technology, long-range planning, maintenance, construction and school finance.
“We want to encourage all community members to participate,” said school board President Chris Pearson. “We hope to get a great cross section of all three communities and a nice mix of parents and community members.”
She added that the goal is to give citizens a deeper understanding of what school districts do and why.
“Our vision is to encourage, nurture and challenge every student, every day,” said Pearson. “But there is so much that goes into accomplishing that vision behind the scenes that people don’t know about. We welcome them in to have conversations with us, learn more about the district, and ask questions.”
Discover Re-2 will meet on the third Thursday of every month, from August to May 2014, for approximately two hours in the morning. Meetings will rotate between the district office and the New Castle Branch Library.
Space will be limited to approximately 20 participants and will be determined on a first come, first served basis. If you are interested in participating, go to garfieldre2.org, or contact Theresa Hamilton at 665-7621 or Thamilton@garfieldre2.org.
