Rifle Police Department and Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Crime Report – July 31, 2014
Editor’s note: The Rifle Police Department and Garfield County Sheriff’s Office reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Dog at large: An animal control deputy responded to a dog at large on U.S. Highway 6 east of Rifle on July 14 at 3:43 p.m. Hugo Ruelas, 42, of Rifle, was issued a summons for dog at large.
Order violation: Deputies responded to a call on West Silver Bell Place in Battlement Mesa on July 14 at 6:49 p.m. John Joseph Patrick McCarthy IV, 31, of Battlement Mesa, was arrested on suspicion of violation of a restraining order, third degree assault and misdemeanor child abuse. He was taken to jail.
Harassment: Deputies were called to a disturbance on County Road 320 outside Rifle on July 15 at 12:01 p.m. Tom E. Vondette, 55, of Rifle, was issued a summons for harassment.
Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a man on County Road 333 outside Rifle on July 15 at 10 a.m. Michael Bruce Shaw, 26, of Glenwood Springs, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.
Theft: On July 16 at 12:04 p.m., police took a report of theft and trespass in the 200 block of E. 21st Street. The case is under investigation.
Theft: Police responded to a call of theft and trespass from the 300 block of West Fifth Street on July 16 at 2:19 p.m. Several items were stolen from a vehicle.
Stolen plate: Police responded to a report of a stolen license plate at the park and ride lot on West Centennial Parkway on July 17 at 6:25 p.m.
Dog at large: On July 17 at 8:36 a.m., officers responded to a report of a dog attacking a jogger and her leashed dog. The aggressive dog was caught and returned to its owner, Craig Fuller, 47, of Rifle, and a summons for allowing the dog to run at large was issued.
Order violation: Officers arrested Kevin Hurley, 45, for violation of protection order in the 200 block of East 18th Street on July 17 at 1:22 p.m. He was taken to jail.
Warrant arrest: On July 17, officers met with Jeffrey G. Franklin, 44, of Rifle, about a valid arrest warrant. Franklin was arrested and taken to jail.
DUI: Deputies contacted a woman in a vehicle on U.S. Highway 6 outside New Castle on July 18 at 12:55 a.m. Melanie Jean Leilani Baumert, 40, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, driving with a revoked license and obstructing a highway. She was taken to jail.
DUI: Deputies contacted a man in a vehicle outside Parachute on July 18 at 6:22 p.m. James Edward Jennings Ochoa, 22, of Loveland, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, driving with excessive alcohol content, not wearing a seat belt and careless driving. He was taken to jail.
Order violation: Police responded to a call of a man having breathing problems on White River Avenue on July 18 at 3:16 p.m. Mark Mueller, 46, was allegedly highly intoxicated and the subject of a restraining order. He was arrested on suspicion of violating that order and taken to jail.
