Rifle Police Department & Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Crime Report – Aug. 29, 2013
Editor’s note: The Rifle Police Department and Garfield County Sheriff’s Office reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Mail boxes damaged
During the evening of Saturday, Aug. 24, and the early morning of Sunday, Aug. 25, around 50 mailboxes were damaged or destroyed in the Silt Mesa area, from County Road 210 and 293 west of Silt to the east at LaFrenz Lane and County Road 250. The area also included the Harvey Gap, Odin and Rainbow Drive areas.
It appeared that some of the mail was tampered with and/or scattered in the process. This is illegal and an invasion of privacy.

Stolen dog: On Aug. 13 at 2:26 p.m., police received a report that a dog was stolen from its yard in the 300 block of East 26th Street. The case is under investigation.
Gun threat: On Aug. 13 at 2:25 p.m., police received a report that an unknown man in a vehicle threatened another man with a gun in the 700 block of West 30th Street. The suspect left in the vehicle, and a witness left on a bicycle. The case is under investigation.
Pot smoking: Police contacted and cited Marcus Thompson, 19, of Rifle, for smoking marijuana in the parking structure in the 200 block of East Avenue on Aug. 14 at 8:37 p.m.
Meth arrest: Officers made a traffic stop in the 100 block of East 21st Street on Aug. 14 at 11:52 p.m. and allegedly found suspected methamphetamine in the vehicle, numerous items of paraphernalia and a large sum of cash. Jason Scott Foreman, 30, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of distribution of methamphetamine and taken to jail.
Dog bite: Police investigated a report of a juvenile bitten by a dog on Aug. 15 at 6:54 p.m. in the 700 block of Fir Avenue. Aaron Edward Triplett, 31, of Rifle, was issued a summons for having a dangerous animal. The dog was quarantined.
Theft: Police are investigating an Aug. 15 9:31 p.m. report of theft at Walmart, 1000 Airport Road, in Rifle. A second theft report was taken on Aug. 16.
Dumpster fire: Police responded to a Dumpster fire in the 1000 block of Railroad Avenue on Aug. 16 at 12:19 a.m. Nearby residents were evacuated until the fire was extinguished. The cause is under investigation.
Criminal mischief: On Aug. 16 at 11:22 a.m., police took a report of an oily substance poured on a vehicle in the 500 block of Birch Court.
Warrant arrest: On Aug. 16 at 1:50 p.m., officers responded to the Garfield County Courthouse in Rifle for a subject with an active warrant. Israel Lopez-Hernandez, 24, of Phoenix, Ariz., was arrested and taken to jail.
Assault: Police responded to the 200 block of West Second Street on Aug. 16 at 3:35 p.m. for a report of an assault between family members in which one person suffered injuries requiring medical treatment. The case is under investigation.
Broken window: Police are investigating an Aug. 17 8:04 p.m. report of a vehicle’s window being broken while it was parked in the 200 block of West 20th Street.
Traffic stop leads to drug charges: Joshua James Guerra, 21, of Rifle, was contacted for a traffic violation at Railroad Avenue and 14th Street on Aug. 17 at 10:14 p.m. and was arrested on suspicion of DUI, DUI per se, not obeying a traffic signal, no car insurance and an invalid registration. During booking at the jail, suspected cocaine was found in Guerra’s shoe. Charges of introduction of contraband and possession of a controlled substance were added.
Underage drinking: Officers saw two men acting suspiciously in the 800 block of White River Avenue on Aug. 18 at 1:56 a.m. Cole Allen Roof, 19, of Rifle, and Trent Richard Sargent, 19, of Grand Junction, were issued summonses for minor in possession of alcohol.
Phone harassment: Officers responded to the 700 block of South White River Avenue on Aug. 18 at 6:34 p.m. for a report of phone harassment. Eugenia Gardner, 45, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of harassment and taken to jail.
Domestic violence: Police arrested Cheri Ann Olson, 41, of Rifle, on suspicion of harassment and domestic violence following a report and investigation of domestic violence in the 700 block of Elder Court on Aug. 19 at 5:40 p.m.
Child abuse, kidnapping arrest: Police received a report on Aug. 20 at 7:04 a.m. that an acquaintance had stolen a car in the 900 block of West 24th Street, which was idling and occupied by the victim’s two young children. The vehicle was located a short time later in the 1800 block of Railroad Avenue and the children were unharmed. April Leona Bates, 34, of Rifle, was arrested and taken to jail on suspicion of child abuse, driving under revocation, criminal mischief, kidnapping and motor vehicle theft.
Theft: On Aug. 20 at 2:28 p.m., officers received a report that a vehicle was broken into and items stolen in the 700 block of East Avenue. The case is under investigation.
Traffic violations: Deputies stopped a vehicle in the 1400 block of Prefontaine Avenue on Aug. 20 at 11:36 p.m. for a traffic violation. Richard Leroy Richey, 37, of Parachute, was issued a summons for a missing or defective tail lamp, speeding and eluding.
Warrant arrest: Deputies responded to a call near County Roads 233 and 225 outside Rifle on Aug. 20 at 12:25 a.m. David Moses Martinez, 29, of Silt, was arrested on an active warrant.
Harassment: Deputies responded to a call on County Road 335 outside New Castle on Aug. 21 at 3:30 p.m. and issued a summons for harassment to Nathaniel Mason Cwalinski, 21, of New Castle.
Order violation: Deputies responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 300 block of Tamarisk Trail in Battlement Mesa on Aug. 21 at 8:07 p.m. Russell James Lashus, 45, of Battlement Mesa, was arrested on suspicion of violation of a restraining order and taken to jail.
Domestic violence: Deputies responded to a call on County Road 225 outside Rifle on Aug. 21 at 8:33 p.m. Nancy Lee Smith, 42, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of harassment and domestic violence and taken to jail.
Credit card fraud: Deputies took a report of a fraud by credit card on County Road 237 outside Silt on Aug. 22 at 7:40 p.m. The fraud occurred in the United Kingdom.
