Rifle Police Department & Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Crime Report – Sept. 26, 2013
Editor’s note: The Rifle Police Department and Garfield County Sheriff’s Office reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Thefts: Police took several reports of thefts from vehicles in the area of Wamsley Way and Will Avenue on Sept. 7 at 11:21 a.m. The case is under investigation.
Public urination: Officers responded to the 100 block of East 26th Street on Sept. 7 at 6:36 p.m. for a report of a man who had allegedly urinated in public and was drinking alcoholic beverages in the parking lot. Justin Curtis Young, 23, of Rifle, was cited for disorderly conduct and having an open container of alcohol.
Fireworks violation: Police repeatedly responded to the 1000 block of West 24th Street on Sept. 7 for several reports of shots fired or possible fireworks. Officers found several people setting off fireworks in the area. Austin Dee Merchant, 29, of Rifle, was cited for prohibited use of fireworks.
Criminal mischief: On Sept. 8 at 11:24 a.m., police took a report of mailboxes damaged in the 2000 block of Acacia Avenue.
Fake money: On Sept. 8 at 12:15 a.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of Railroad Avenue for a report of a counterfeit bill.
Warrant arrest: Officers observed Cody Allen Smith, 23, of Rifle, in the 100 block of White River Avenue on Sept. 10 at 7:42 a.m. and knew he had three active warrants. Smith was arrested and taken to jail.
Drug arrest: Deputies responded to a call on County Road 333 outside Rifle on Sept. 10 at 9:43 a.m. Michael Alexander Newton, 44, of Silt, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, authorized possession of a substance in an unauthorized container and introducing contraband. He was taken to jail.
Sex offender violation: On Sept. 11 at 2:36 p.m., deputies took a report of a possible sex offender registration violation outside Parachute. The case is under investigation.
Domestic violence: Deputies responded to a call on County Road 245 outside New Castle on Sept. 11 at 7:22 a.m. Kathy A. Watson, 47, of Parachute, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and criminal mischief and taken to jail.
Warrant arrest: Deputies responded to a call on County Road 333 outside Rifle on Sept. 12 at 6:25 p.m. Cody Wayne Marquette, 22, of Rifle, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.
Warrant arrest: Deputies responded to a call on U.S. Highway 6 east of Rifle on Sept. 12 at 10:27 p.m. Armando Gutierrez, 45, of Rifle, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.
Attempted break in: On Sept. 13 at 9:36 a.m., deputies learned of an attempted break in in the 200 block of Remington Street. The case is closed pending further leads.
Fraud: On Sept. 13 at 10:33 a.m., deputies took a report of fraud on Silver Queen Circle in Battlement Mesa. The case is closed pending further leads.
DUI: Deputies made a traffic stop at mile marker 90 in the westbound lanes of I-70 near Rifle on Sept. 14 at 7:43 p.m. Donald Ray Maughan, 52, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, having an open alcoholic beverage in his vehicle, driving with an excessive alcohol content and failure to drive in a single lane. He was taken to jail.
Theft: On Sept. 15 at 8:05 a.m., deputies learned of a theft that occurred on County Road 320 outside Rifle The case is closed pending further leads.
Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a man at the Rifle rest area, 200 Lions Park Circle, on Sept. 15 at 9:28 a.m. Noe Ramirez, 26, of New Castle, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.
Concealed weapon arrest: Officers contacted Cody Allen Smith, 23, of Rifle, in the 100 block of White River Avenue on Sept. 10 at 8:12 a.m. He was known to have several active warrants. A search revealed a concealed weapon, so along with the warrants, Smith was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and taken to jail.
Stolen car: On Sept. 10 at 12:48 p.m., police took a report of a stolen vehicle from the 100 block of East Third Street. The case is under investigation.
Stolen purse: On Sept. 10 at 4:07 p.m., officers took a report of a purse that was allegedly stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 1600 block of West Seventh Street.
DUI: Police contacted a vehicle for careless driving near Colorado Highway 13 and the roundabouts on Sept. 11 at 12:17 a.m. Thadias Michael Gonzalez, 37, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, driving under restraint, and careless driving. Gonzalez was later released from the Rifle Police Department after posting bond.
Warrant arrest: Officers contacted a woman known to have an active warrant in the 100 block of June Avenue on Sept. 11 at 3:50 p.m. Audralea Dephane Coe, 25, of Rifle, was arrested and later released on bond.
Criminal mischief: On Sept. 11 at 4:27 p.m., police took a report of damage to a vehicle while it was parked in the 1000 block of Airport Rd. The vehicle was scratched with vulgarities.
Theft: Police responded to the 400 block of East Second Street on Sept. 12 at 6:48 a.m. for a report of criminal trespass and theft. A locked vehicle was damaged, broken into and several pieces of specialized gas well equipment were reported stolen. Joshua Anthony Mauer, 24, of New Castle, was later arrested on suspicion of first degree criminal trespass.
Warrant arrest: Police contacted David Daniel Curiel, 26, of Glenwood Springs, in the 1800 block of Railroad Avenue on Sept. 12 at 8:36 p.m. Curiel had called police to turn himself in on a warrant. He was arrested on a felony warrant and taken to jail.
Pot plant theft: On Sept. 12 at 9:11 p.m., police contacted Joshua Anthony Mauer, 24, of New Castle, at the Garfield County Jail in Glenwood Springs, where he was being held on other charges. Mauer was cited for suspicion of theft of marijuana plants.
Domestic violence: Police responded to a domestic disturbance in the 900 block of Taughenbaugh Boulevard on Sept. 12 at 9:23 a.m. Shelly Marie Wechseler, 32, of Rifle, was arrested and taken to jail on suspicion of assault and domestic violence.
Warrant arrest: Police responded to the alley in the 500 block of Railroad Avenue on Sept. 12 at 9:32 p.m. for a disturbance. Joshua Anthony Mauer, 24, of New Castle, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and taken to jail.
Shoplifting: On Sept. 13 at 11:02 a.m., police arrested Gary James Fifield, 59, on suspicion of theft that occurred in the 600 block of Wapiti Court. He was taken to jail.
Sexual assault: On Sept. 16 at 11:32 a.m., deputies assisted Rifle police officers with an alleged sexual assault investigation in Rifle.
Traffic violations: Deputies made a traffic stop in the 400 block of Stone Quarry Road in Battlement Mesa on Sept. 16 at 6:53 a.m. Juanita Murillo, 61, of Parachute, was issued a summons for violating restrictions on a temporary permit, speeding and failure to provide proof of insurance.
Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a man about a criminal complaint in the 100 block of East 26th Street outside Rifle on Sept. 16 at 11:48 p.m. Miguel Omar Martinez, 21, of Rifle, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.
