Satter named new Riverside principal
The Garfield School District Re-2 announced Friday that Karen Satter will be named the next principal of Riverside Middle School.
The former counselor, instructional coach and dean of students at Graham Mesa Elementary has been with the district for 13 years and raised her two children in New Castle.
“I’ve been part of the community for years,” she said in a press release. “My youngest son has been through in the Garfield Re-2 school system from preschool and now at Coal Ridge High School, and my oldest son is graduating this year from Coal Ridge High School. I know the people in New Castle, and they know me. We are a community, and we rely on each other.”
Satter had been among three finalists to replace Jeena Williams as the principal of Riverside Middle School. The three finalists went through a two-day interview process last month that included two interview panels, one with just students, and the other with teachers, staff, Riverside and Garfield Re-2 administrators and parents.
Anybody from the public was invited to attend the event as the community got to meet the three candidates: Satter; Jenny Nipper, assistant principal at Rifle Middle School; and Michael Hasse, assistant principal at Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas. Ultimately, Satter was chosen.
“I believe in this school,” she said. “I believe in the people that are there — the staff, the students, the parents and the community. It is a place where we can make the relationships very deep and the achievement very high.”
Out of her 13 years in the district, Satter has been with Riverside Middle School for 10, serving as a counselor for six years and the dean of students and athletic director for the other four.
During her 21 years in education, she has served a variety of roles, including classroom teacher, counselor, instructional coach, dean of students and athletic director.
“We had exceptional candidates for the Riverside position,” Garfield Re-2 Superintendent Brent Curtice said. “Karen has deep knowledge of the New Castle community, Riverside Middle School and the goals of the district. She has a passion for middle school students developing relationships. We are excited to welcome her in her new role.
“We are grateful for Ms. Williams’ service and wish her success in her ventures.”
