Trail run honors DuBois, raises scholarship money

Capt. Will "Pyro" DuBois was unaware his F-16 was descending until the final second before impact in a fatal crash last December, according to a report released by the Air Force.

A trail run to raise money for a scholarship fund established in honor of Air Force Capt. Will DuBois of New Castle is scheduled for Aug. 15 on the West Elk Trail of the Flat Tops Wilderness.

DuBois died Dec. 1 when his F-16 crashed near a coalition air base during a mission against Islamic State extremists.

Pyro’s “Push It Up” Trail Run/Walk will feature 3.5-kilomter and 7.7 kilometer courses. “Pyro” was DuBois’ Air Force nickname. The scholarship in his name will go to future fighter pilots. Participants are invited to do as DuBois might have — to double down and run both. Cost is $35 per run, and the event starts at 8 a.m.

The run is at an elevation of 8,500 feet, and it is a steep, rigorous trail riddled with roots, rocks and uneven terrain. But, as DuBois once said, “Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.”

A barbecue will follow the race, and participants will receive a mug to fill with a beverage of their choice.

To register go to https://www.raceentry.com/races/pyros-push-it-up-trail-run/2015/register. Those who can’t make it to Colorado are invited to donate and do a virtual run. You can order a Pyro T-shirt at pyroswings.com. Directions to the race start are at that website.
