Water conservation urged in Rifle

Rifle residents and businesses were asked to conserve water late Tuesday afternoon, after a component in the city’s aging water treatment plant failed and limited how much water the plant could treat, said City Manager Matt Sturgeon.

“All our water tanks are full and the water plant supervisor is confident we can keep them full,” he added. “But we ask people to conserve as much as they can.”

Reverse 911 calls were made to notify residents and notices were posted on the Rifle Police Department Facebook page immediately after the failure that described a more dire situation. Sturgeon emphasized the city can still meet water demands, and water quality was not affected.

“We should know more in the morning,” he said. “We’ll drain the component and evaluate where we’re at.”

City officials have said the Graham Mesa water treatment plant is aging, undersized to serve projected population growth and unable to meet possible tougher federal water quality standards in the future.

Last year, Rifle voters approved a 3/4 cent sales tax to help repay to a $25.5 million, low-interest loan from the Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority to build a new plant. Work was scheduled to begin on the plant before the end of the year.
