What Happened?

• Rifle High School’s baseball team managed a split with Class 4A Western Slope League contender Palisade this past Friday, losing the first game in five innings, 15-5, before rebounding for a 10-4 victory in the second game. Bailey Hoffmeister threw a complete game in the game 2 victory, when he went 3-for-4 with four RBIs at the plate to pace the Bears. Rifle plays Basalt in a non-league game this afternoon.

• Grand Valley High School’s baseball team moved to 2-11 overall and 2-10 in Class 3A Western Slope League play when it split a doubleheader at Aspen this past Saturday. Grand Valley won the first game 13-3 before falling in the second game, 10-5. The Cardinals, who hosted Basalt on Tuesday, will play a league doubleheader at Olathe on Saturday.

• Grand Valley High School’s girls soccer team broke a school record for the program’s longest winning streak, moving to 10-2-0 overall and 6-1-0 in Class 3A Western Slope League play with wins over Basalt (6-0 on April 17), Aspen (8-0 on April 19) and Vail Mountain on April 22). The wins extended the Cardinals’ winning streak to nine games, a span where Grand Valley has outscored its opponents, 56-5. The Cardinals will try to extend their winning streak when they host Rangely on Friday, Basalt on May 1 and Aspen on May 2.

• Rifle’s track and field team got a stellar outing from Brittany Neuroth at the Phil Wertman Invitational in Grand Junction this past Saturday. Neuroth prevailed in the discus for the fifth consecutive meet with a mark of 114 feet, 10 inches. Also at the meet, Coal Ridge’s boys track team swept the sprint relay events, winning to 4x100 (43.97 seconds), the 4x200 (1:30.51) and the 4x400 (3:28.38).
