What’s Happening?

• Coal Ridge High School’s football team has gotten off to an 0-4 start, but the Titans have their best chance at a victory on Friday. Coal Ridge (0-4, 0-2) will host Pagosa Springs (1-3, 1-1 Class 2A Western Slope League), which is coming off a 6-2 victory over Basalt this past week. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Friday.

• Rifle High School’s volleyball team went into Tuesday’s Class 3A Western Slope League match at Grand Valley with a 5-5 overall record. The Bears, who will move up to Class 4A with the rest of the school’s teams next year, won just six matches all of last year on its way to a 6-17 overall record.

• Rifle’s cross country team had a respectable finish at this past weekend’s Glenwood Springs Invitational cross country meet.

The Rifle boys finished fifth in the team standings, with Brenden Wagler finishing 10th individually in 18 minutes, 27.8 seconds. Behind him was John Coombs (18th, 19:16.1), Gabe Marbas (31st, 19:47.9), and Jack Rubalcave (74th, 22:08.6).

On the girls side, Rifle didn’t have enough runners to form a team but got solid performances from Kelly Coombs (29th, 23:38.9) and Brenda DeLoera (83rd, 27:13.2).

• Coal Ridge High School’s boys soccer team, ranked No. 4 in the CHSAAnow.com Class 3A boys soccer poll, earned an 18-0 victory over Grand Valley this past Saturday. Grand Valley coach Chris Walker, however, was especially pleased with his goalkeeper, Ben Coleman, who he said finished with eight one-on-one saves to highlight Grand Valley’s efforts.
