What Happened?

• Tanner Quick scored a game-high 28 points and dominated Palisade inside the paint to lead Rifle High’s boys basketball team to a 62-53 win over the Bulldogs in a Class 4A Western Slope League game on Tuesday. Trenton Brown added 18 points for the Bears, who went ahead by as many as 16 points before the Bulldogs mounted a late comeback. Zach Marengo finished with 19 points to pace Palisade. Rifle improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league play with the win.

• Palisade’s girls basketball team netted a 20-point third quarter to rally past Rifle, 62-56, on Tuesday. Chante Church finished with 26 points and scored 16 in the first half, giving Rifle (1-6 overall, 1-2 league) a 31-30 halftime lead.

• Rifle High School’s wrestling team had a stellar weekend at the Eagle Valley Invitational in Gypsum this past weekend, finishing third in the team standings of the 19-team tournament. Winning at 138 pounds was Rifle’s Oscar Ruelas, who beat Moffat County’s Brayden Peterson by a 9-4 decision. Taking first at 285 pounds was Jose Prodo of Rifle, who pinned Xavier Mendoza of Eagle Valley in 2:33. Rifle’s Alex Rivas took third in the 152-pound weight class, beating Moffat County’s Jesus Duarte in a major decision, 13-0. His teammate, 195-pounder Clayton Coombs, took third, and Colten Bumgardner took fifth at 182 pounds. Rifle finished third in the team standings with 117 points. Cedaredge won the tournament with 178.5, with Eagle Valley following (172). Grand Valley finished seventh in the team standings.

Winning at 160 pounds was Grand Valley’s William Hinkle, who beat Moffat County’s Stelios Peroulis by an 8-1 decision. Cardinal Miguel Valles reached the 132-pound final, only to lose to Summit’s Nick Wittrock, 5-3.

On Tuesday, Rifle’s wrestling team netted dual victories over Steamboat Springs and Palisade.

• Both of Grand Valley’s girls and boys basketball teams netted victories over Coal Ridge on Tuesday. The Grand Valley girls got 15 points from junior Jordan Scott, which included her layup with 1:01 remaining that lifted the Cardinals to a 40-38 win. The Grand Valley boys got a 20-point, three 3-pointer performance from Sam Parker on their way to holding off the Titans for a 76-64 victory.
