Wildlife zones to remain in northwest Colorado

Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) traffic operations, having met with local law enforcement in Rio Blanco, Moffat and Garfield counties and Colorado State Patrol, will keep several wildlife zones intact on CO 13, US 40 and CO 82. Moving forward the zones will maintain the fines doubled signing, but eliminate the nighttime speed limits in the two zones that have them.

The zones being maintained are:

CO 13 mile point 28-38.81

CO 13 mile point 58-68

CO 13 mile point 68-88

US 40 mile point 93-103

CO 82 mile point 31-36

Wildlife zones came to fruition after a study was conducted from April 2010 through May 2012, based on House Bill 10-1238, which directed CDOT to establish roadways with doubled fines for speeding in designated wildlife crossing zones, with certain corridors also posting lowered nighttime speed limits.

In October of 2014 a final report was issued and the data did show an overall statewide wildlife vs. vehicle collision (WVC) decrease of 9 percent in the wildlife zones.
