LAKEWOOD — Saturday morning’s final in the 110-meter hurdles was the first time that Jose Lopez had raced for a state championship. It is not, however, the first time he’s had the opportunity.

Lopez, a Roaring Fork High School senior, nearly won a state title at the Class 3A State Championships at Jefferson County Stadium. He finished second, however, crossing the finish line in 15.18 seconds. Lutheran’s Matt Hansen pulled away at the very end, winning in 14.85.

Last year, Lopez had qualified for the state meet as a junior in the 110 hurdles the year before with a time that ranked him 13th in all of Class 3A, but he wasn’t able to go because he had just returned from California with his family on the weekend of the state meet, he said.

“It does bother me a little,” Lopez said in reference to missing the state meet last year. “I probably could have performed better [this year] and gotten used to this big stage.”

Regardless, he still performed well on the big stage even if he’d never performed on it prior to this weekend. The high hurdles was one of two events that he earned a podium finish for, including a tie for third place in the high jump (6 feet even).

In all, thanks to the efforts of Lopez, Roaring Fork finished as the highest-scoring track team from Garfield County with 14.5 points. Coal Ridge and Buena Vista were right behind with 14 points. Grand Valley, thanks to the finishes of senior Ben Coleman, finished with seven points.

Lutheran won the team title with 82.5 points.

Coal Ridge got an eighth-place finish in the 100 meters from Sergio Valentin (11.60) to aid in team scoring. Coleman finished fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.53) for his second podium finish of the meet.

On the girls side, Coal Ridge managed a respectable finish in the team standings by finishing in a sixth-place tie with Manitou Springs with 44 points. Winning the meet was Eaton with 95.5 points, with Lamar (80) and Platte Valley (77.5) following.

The Titans were helped by the efforts of sisters Kourtney Gasaway and Amber Bowles, who each qualified in both hurdles events. Gasaway finished ninth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Bowles was sixth in the 300 hurdles and, in the 100 hurdles, finished third for the second consecutive year.

The big relay finish of the day for the Titans came from Faith Ward, Dana Kotz, Bowles and Mariela Martinez, who ran the 4×100 for the first time together and managed a third-place finish in 50.89 seconds. Coal Ridge’s 4×400 relay — which last season set the 3A state meet record — finished sixth in 4:11.20. The Titans nearly finished fifth in that race thanks to anchor-leg Martinez, who nearly caught Manitou Springs’ fourth runner but came just one-hundredth of a second short.

Martinez also finished sixth in the 200. Nearly placing in the triple jump was junior Kaitlyn Detlefsen, who reached the event’s finals but couldn’t crack the top nine. Grand Valley’s girls had a state placer in sophomore Kylyn Rigsby, who finished fourth in the 300 hurdles in 47.17.

“I’m happy that I did well, but I’m not content because I’d like to do better,” she said after the race. “Now, the key is the work harder, build that endurance and be faster for next season.”
