A rough return to the hardwood for Glenwood
It was one of those back-from-the-holiday-break basketball games everyone expects to happen, but no one likes to see.
Over the four quarters of Friday’s Western Slope League girls’ basketball opener between Glenwood Springs and Palisade, there were plenty of wild passes thrown to nonexistent teammates, field goal attempts missed by feet, not inches, and an endless spate of turnovers.
Unfortunately, the miscues seemingly were mostly made by the Demons.
While absorbing a 48-28 loss to the 0-7 Bulldogs, Glenwood shot 15 percent (3-of-20) from the floor and committed 16 turnovers in the first half.
Palisade wasn’t any better at the start, going 1-of-13 in the first quarter and clinging to a 5-4 lead at the end of the period.
Then the roof caved in for the Demons.
Palisade opened the second quarter by scoring 10 straight points, and Glenwood, after scoring the game’s initial field goal, went 12 minutes and 37 seconds of playing time between baskets.
The Bulldogs took a 21-7 lead at the intermission, and the Demons never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Glenwood got to that point twice in the third period on scores from Keegan Nadon and Nikita Daniely.
Daniely finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, leading the Demons in both departments. Megan McKinnie added nine with Jeri Polowchena tossing in six points before exiting with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.
The loss dropped Glenwood’s record to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the Western Slope League.
