Antonelli edged in Match Play semis

Former Rifle High School Standout Luke Antonelli fell a putt short of qualifying for today’s finals at the 103rd CGA State Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club.

With his semifinal match all square on the 18th green against 2001 CGA State Match Play champion Shawn Wills, Antonelli, 19, had an eight-foot putt for birdie to secure his spot in the title round. Wills was faced with a difficult two-putt for par from over 50 feet.

Wills’ first putt came to rest outside Antonelli’s ball and he proceeded to sink the nine-footer for par. Antonelli missed his would-be winning birdie putt and settled for par and a playoff.

After going through the first five holes of the playoff even, Wills made a five-foot putt for par and Antonelli missed a 50-footer that would have kept him alive.

Wills faces Jeff Hanson, who defeated Zen Brown 3 and 2 in the other semifinal match, in the 36-hole final today.

In Antonelli’s quarterfinal match Thursday, he defeated Troy Sidabras by forfeit. In Wednesday’s round of 16, Antonelli dispatched 1989 champion Kent Moore with a two-putt from 50 feet on the third hole of a playoff.
