Area 1A, 2A playoff games set

The 14-year wait between state football playoff appearances for Grand Valley is over. Finally.

According to information released Sunday from the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA), the 8-1 Cardinals open the Class 1A playoffs at home against 6-3 Wray.

All first-round state playoff games, according to CHSAA, must be played at 1 p.m., Saturday.

Any changes in the date or starting time of playoff games must be approved by both schools and by CHSAA.

In Class 2A action, a last-second decision, approved by all seven Western Slope Conference school athletic directors, allowed Roaring Fork A.D. Larry Black and his Olathe counterpart Brent Wareham to toss a coin to determine which school would get the second seed and which the wild card for the two remaining Class 2A state playoff slots available to the WSC teams.

The coin flip was favorable to Roaring Fork. The Rams open 2A playoffs at Trinidad.

Victories by Gunnison, Roaring Fork and Olathe in their final regular-season conference games Friday gave all three schools a 6-1 record in conference play to cause a three-way tie.

Gunnison, who lost 7-0 to Roaring Fork on Oct. 6 in Carbondale, received the conference’s No. 1 seed.

Trinidad, Roaring Fork’s first-round opponent, went undefeated in six Tri-Peaks Conference games with an 8-1 regular-season mark.
