BATTLEMENT MESA — Ty Caron was the top Garfield County prep golfer in the field at Battlement Mesa Golf Course on Thursday, shooting a 4-over 76 to crack the individual top 10 at the Grand Valley Invitational tournament.

Caron, who attends Rifle High School, finished 10th individually. His score was tops among a Bears squad that finished seventh in the team standings.

The tournament, which featured 19 high schools from Summit to Cedaredge, served as the first big tournament of the high school fall sports season. Practices for Colorado boys golf teams began on Monday, and practices for all other sports — football, boys soccer, volleyball and cross country — get under way on Aug. 12.

Clayton Crawford of Aspen won medalist honors, finishing with a score of 3-under 69. Tristan Rohrbaugh of Basalt — a second-place finisher at this past July’s Glenwood Open men’s golf tournament at Glenwood Springs Golf Course — was one stroke back with a 2-under 70, with Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction third with a 1-under 71.

Grand Junction won the team title with a combined score of 223, with Vail Christian (224) and Aspen (227) following. Rifle’s score of 240 was good enough for seventh place, with Coal Ridge tying Eagle Valley for 11th place at 251.

Also finishing respectably was Rifle’s Cody Capwell, who along with Tyler Scott of Coal Ridge shot a 77 to tie two other people for 11th place overall individually. Tyler Dove, who carded a 93, had the best score of the tournament for host Grand Valley.
