Carbondale’s Chad Simon took second place in the sponsored division of the Second Annual Carbondale Cup skateboarding competition Sunday at the North Face Skate Park in Carbondale.
Locals show well at Carbondale Cup
Matt Kabeisman of Englewood took top honors in the division, while Breckenridge’s Matt Atkin took third.
In the advanced division, Grand Junction’s Jonathon Sale was first, followed by Jordan Wood of Glenwood Springs and Braden Taylor, also of Grand Junction.
Longmont’s Chris Betcher won the intermediate division.
Area residents swept the top three spots of the boys beginners division, with Silt’s Fred Ables coming in first, ahead of Will Adams and Jake Musser, both of Carbondale.
Glenwood’s Maliea Sanchez was the top skater in the girls beginners division. Emily Sale, Grand Junction, and China Tuttle, Silt, took second and third, respectively.
Athletic sign-ups for all Garfield Re-2 middle school and high school students start Monday. Students must pick up and/or turn in all forms and pay all athletic fees by Aug. 29.

A meeting for all student-athletes and parents planning to participate in the Roaring Fork High School golf program will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the high school.

The Basalt Soccer Club will host an MLS camp Aug. 15-19. Registration forms are available at Basalt Town Hall or by calling 927-0523, ext. 507.
The Mountain Madness “Skate, Rate and Relate” Skateboard Competition has been moved from Saturday to Sept. 17 while the skate park’s street course elements are upgraded.
The competition, part of the Mountain Madness Series, is open to all levels and starts at noon. The event includes mini-pipe and a street course competitions. Helmets are required.
The event will include a barbecue and music. Registration is $10 ($12 nonresidents) and is available at the Glenwood Community Center or the day of the event at Two Rivers Skate Park.
Longhorn Stampede 5K set for Aug. 27
The Longhorn Stampede 5- kilometer run is slated for Saturday, Aug. 27. Registration is from 7:30-8:20 a.m., and the race starts at 8:30 at Basalt High School. All proceeds benefit the BHS cross country program.
