The Sunlight Ski team kicks off the 2005-’06 race season at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sunlight Mountain Resort. In conjunction with the event, youngsters can register to join the Buddy Werner and T-squad programs.

Sunlight Ski team head coach Cain Mahan and racers from the team will be on-hard to answer questions about the program.

Semifinal games of the boys eighth-grade PEG League post-season basketball tournament will be at Carbondale Middle School today at 5 and 6:30 p.m. The first game pits undefeated Rifle, the No. 1 seed, against No. 5 Glenwood Springs.

The nightcap features No. 2 seed Aspen against No. 3 St. John of Parachute.



Glenwood advanced to the semifinals by upsetting No. 4 Riverside, 42-38, Tuesday. In Tuesday’s other first-round games Aspen defeated Carbondale, 51-25 and St. John took a 34-28 decision over Basalt.

The Alpine Bank/Rifle Recreation 3-on-3 basketball tournament for fifth- through eighth-grade boys and girls teams will be held Jan. 7 and 8 at Rifle High School. Cost is $60 per team. Teams can have a maximum of four players. Registration deadline is Dec. 30.

The United States Polo Association-sanctioned World Snow Polo Championships are set for Dec. 17-18 at Rio Grande Park in Aspen.

Four teams of local and international polo players will compete in a two-day elimination tournament for the championship crown.

Admission to the games is free to the general public. V.I.P. tickets are available. V.I.P. tickets include access to the event’s heated hospitality tent and social events held in conjunction with the games.

The eighth-annual Rifle Gap Ice Fishing Tournament will take place Jan. 21-22. There will be three registration categories: Adult, 11-17, and 10 and younger, with rainbow trout, brown trout and yellow perch divisions in each category.

Winners must comply with the 2006 Rifle Gap State Park Ice Fishing Tournament Official Rules and could take home prizes from $50-$500 or the grand prize of $20,000.

Preregistration for the 14th Day of Infamy Snowshoe Race is being taken at Summit Canyon Mountaineering until 6 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $20. Race day registration will be taken at Sunlight Mountain Resort’s day lodge at 9 a.m. for $22. The race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Fee includes a long-sleeved T-shirt and a goodie bag. Proceeds benefit the animal shelters of Garfield County.
