Registrations are now being accepted for the annual Glenwood Canyon Shuffle, a 13.1-mile run and relay race and a separate 5-kilometer run/walk on the Glenwood Canyon bike path east of Glenwood Springs.Both events are Saturday, Oct. 7. The half marathon starts at 9 a.m., followed by the 5K at 10 a.m. Entry fee for half-marathon individuals is $25 and $50 for relay teams. The Basalt Recreation Department is offering basketball instruction for area youths throughout October. A class for kindergarten through second grade is set for Oct. 10-12 and Oct. 17-19 at the Basalt Middle School annex gym. Cost is $30 for each class.Clinics for third- and fourth-graders and fifth- through sixth-graders are Oct. 20. The third-fourth grade clinic is from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Five Carbondale residents advanced to the sectional competition by winning their divisions in the local NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick competition recently.Local winners who moved on to the Oct. 15 event in Grand Junction are Jenny Garcia, Zachary Nelson, Tanner and Shea Nieslanik and David Hammond.
Residents ages 16 and older interested in playing the sport of Badminton can participate in pick-up games Monday evenings from 7-9 p.m., beginning Oct. 30 at the Carbondale Middle School gymnasium.Information: Chris, 704-4115
The Carbondale Recreation Department’s drop-in men’s open gym basketball program takes place Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. at the Carbondale Middle School gym, beginning Oct. 19 through April 12.The fee is $5 per session or $60 for the entire season. The Potato Day Tater/Fossil Trot will take place Oct. 7 in Carbondale. The three categories of the race, the 5K, 1-mile run/walk and the walker division, will all begin at Hendrick Ranch Soccer Field at River Valley Ranch.Prerace signup can be completed at Red Rock Diner (963-4111) on Highway 133 in Carbondale or at the Carbondale Senior Housing Office (963-9326). Race-day registration will be held at Hendrick Soccer Field from 7-8 a.m. on Oct. 7. The cost is $20 and includes a T-shirt, awards and a chance to win raffle prizes. Proceeds will go to Carbondale Youth Soccer and Carbondale Senior Classes.
