Rifle’s Vondette takes honors in barrel racesCRAIG – Rifle’s C.J. Vondette, took top honors in the Open 1D and Youth 1D divisions of the National Barrel Horse Association Colorado-10 event held here Saturday.Vondette, the reigning Colorado youth 1D champion, finished with a time of 17.855 to sweep the 1D events.Vondette’s younger sister, Devon Conn, kept the prize money in the family with a victory in the Youth 3D and a second-place finish in the Open 3D races. Luffler wins advanced title at Sk8 ContestCARBONDALE – Ian Luffler edged Jordan Wood and Robert Reyes for first place in the advanced division of the Bonedale Full Pipe Bash Sk8 Contest held Sunday at the Carbondale Skate Park.Luffler skateboarded to a score of 54 points, while Wood and Reyes finished with marks of 52.5 and 52 for second and third, respectively.Chris Boettcher won the intermediate crown with a score of 47, followed by Joe McLaren in second with 46 and Braden Taylor in third with 43.In the youth intermediate skate, Kyle McLaren dominated the competition with a score of 51. Jake Musser was the nearest foe with 43 and Fred Ables took third with 42 points. Longhorn Stampede 5K slated Aug. 28BASALT – The first-ever Longhorn Stampede 5-kilometer run will be held Saturday, Aug. 28. Race-day registration is 7:45-8:15 a.m. at Basalt High School and the race begins at 8:30 a.m.The cost of the race is $15 and all entrants receive a T-shirt and entry in a prize drawing. Proceeds benefit the Basalt High School cross country team.Information: Ron Lund, 927-3524.Tennis and Tonic on tap WednesdayThe Tennis and Tonic adult social hour is scheduled for Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Rippy Tennis Complex at the Glenwood Springs Community Center.This is the final Tennis and Tonic of the summer. The event offers an opportunity to meet other tennis players and work on your swing. It is free and open to the public 21-and-older.Demon youth volleyball camp starts TuesdayRegistration is being accepted for the Demon Volleyball Camp. The three day camp starts Tuesday at the Glenwood Springs High School gymnasium and is open to girls entering grades fifth through eighth. The cost is $30.Information: Denise Greene, 984-3813.GSMS P.E. uniform deadline MondayGlenwood Springs Middle School students in sixth through eighth grades who need to order a P.E. uniform for the upcoming year should do so by Monday. Order forms are available in the office at GSMS and the cost for a complete set is $15. Uniforms can also be purchased after school begins, but size selections may be limited.GSHS x-c team looks to bolster ranksGlenwood Springs High School cross country coach Joe Mollica invites runners of all levels to join the team for the fall.
