Former Rifle standout wrestler Ryan Whittington was recently named the new assistant wrestling coach at Grand Junction High School. Whittington, who is student teaching at GJHS and finishing up with his degree in kinesiology at Mesa State College, is also serving as an assistant coach for the Mesa State football team.Whittington played football and wrestled for Rifle, winning a state wrestling title in 2002. He also was a four-year letterman on Mesa’s football team and also lettered in the Mavericks’ inaugural wrestling season last year.

Rocky Mountain Martial Arts in Aspen, Basalt and New Castle, which teaches students the technique, history, tradition, philosophy and discipline of the Korean martial art of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, announces the following rank promotions: Ninth Gup (white belt): William Forest (Aspen), Josh Milby (New Castle), Jenny Beauchamp (New Castle) and Bret Beauchamp (New Castle).Seventh Gup (orange belt): Nick Soho (Basalt) and Cody Spyker (New Castle). Tomorrow’s Voices, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping high school students in the Roaring Fork Valley find their civic voice through ethical and intellectual education, is holding a 5K race – Run for the Constitution – on Nov. 4 in Aspen.The race will take place at Paepcke Park at 9 a.m. and there will be lots of prizes.The cost is $25 if you register before race day or $30 if you register at the race. Defiance Volleyball Club will be having an organizational coaches meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at Fiesta Guadalajara in Glenwood Springs. All current and new coaches are welcome to attend, as well as those who might have an interest in being a head or assistant volleyball coach for the 2008 season. Roan Plateau Soccer Association will be holding tryouts for the spring 2008 U18 boys state team on Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. in Rifle at Deerfield Park’s Spevere Field. Spevere is the field next to the basketball courts. To qualify, a player must have a birth date of Aug. 1, 1989, or later.Information: 876-0183.

The Roan Plateau Soccer Association is looking for coaches for its U18 boys team during the 2008 spring state league. This is a volunteer position with a time commitment spanning from March through the end of May.Practices are held three days a week for two hours. The season consists of five home and five away games and travel could be as far as Pueblo. Coaches should have a competitive soccer background.Information: 876-0183.

Glenwood Springs High School winter sport athletes (wrestling, boys and girls basketball and girls swim) are slated to meet Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the high school gym. All athletes and parents should plan top attend. All paperwork will be handed out at this time. The paperwork and $75 athletic fee must be submitted before an athlete is allowed to practice.
