The Demon football game LIFT-UP food drive will be held at the upcoming semifinal Glenwood football game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stubler Memorial Field in Glenwood Springs.

John Gilcrest hit his first hole-in-one ever at Glenwood Springs Golf Club on Tuesday.

Using a 6-iron, Gilcrest covered 153 yards with the ace, which fell into the eighth-hole cup and was witnessed by Danny Adams and Doug Zon.

The 17th annual Day of Infamy Showshoe Race will be held on Dec. 7 at Sunlight Mountain Resort. The 8K race, which starts at 10 a.m., winds through Babbish Gulch on Sunlight’s cross-country trails. Snowshoes will be provided for the race.

Racers can preregister at Summit Canyon Mountaineering for $20, and race-day registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Sunlight lodge and costs $22. Registration includes a T-shirt and a goodie bag. The cut-off for preregistration is Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.

The race benefits the animal shelters of Garfield County (CARE, Mid-Valley Animal Rescue and Rifle Animal Shelter).

Basalt Recreation is now accepting registrations for the 2008 instructional basketball league that begins Dec. 15 with preseason practices.

The registration fee is $65 for both the third- and fourth-grade division and the fifth- and sixth-grade division. Practices are held two nights a week and weekly games are Sunday evenings. Register by Dec. 10. Volunteer coaching opportunities are also available.

This year’s Turkey Day 5K race is set for Thanksgiving morning (Nov. 27) at 10 a.m. at the Glenwood Springs Golf Course. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

Keeping with tradition, registration for the race remains at $5, which includes a scenic race course, a post-race party, friend and community camaraderie and metabolism.

Proceeds benefit the Carbondale Community School.
