In the semifinals of the PEG League Tournament at Carbondale Middle School, the Glenwood Springs Cougars eighth-grade team lost to the St. John Panthers on a buzzer-beater.

St. John moved onto the championship game when they drained a bucket at the end of regulation to walk away with a 24-22 win.

Coach Blake Risner said the boys played a great game defensively, since St. John scored 34 points on them earlier in the season.

But, the boys only hit nine baskets the whole game and shot just 30 percent from the foul line, Risner added.

Kenneth Madrid and Collin Porterfield each had six points and Vinson Marr and Grant Fegan each had four points.

The Cougars are 7-5 this season, and will play at 9 a.m. today against the loser of the Rifle-Carbondale semifinal game.

League play will be on Monday nights from Jan. 5 until April 13 at the Carbondale Community Recreation Center. Match times are 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and the cost per team is $200.

A captains/players meeting is scheduled for Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. at the rec center before open gym volleyball begins.
