The Thunder River 5K Run/Walk, which benefits the Thunder River Theatre Company’s children’s programs, is scheduled for Saturday at 8 a.m. in downtown Carbondale. Register at Independence Run and Hike (995 Cowen Center Drive, Carbondale).

Awards will be given by age group. There will also be a costume category. Also featured will be a big raffle.

The second annual Run For Their Lives 5K run/walk is slated for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Registration begins on race day at 7:15 a.m. at Stoney Ridge ball field, behind the old Roy Moore Elementary School in Silt. The cost for the race is $25, and proceeds benefit the Pauline S. Schneegas Wildlife Foundation, which helps to rehabilitate and release wild animals.

Roan Cliff Chaos will take place June 13-14, north of Rifle on the JQS trail and Hubbard Mesa area.

Saturday features a cross-country race, starting at 8:30 a.m. The expert category starts that day with four laps on the six-mile loop, followed by the sport (two laps) and beginner (one lap) categories.

Sunday features a hill climb race up the JQS road to the top of the Roan Plateau. The race covers 2,600 vertical feet in seven miles. That race starts at 8 a.m.

Entry forms can be obtained through the website at, or by calling 625-2151. Forms can be returned to the Rifle Recreation Center, located at 202 Railroad Ave. in Rifle. The cost is $25 for one race or $35 for two.

The second annual Western Slope Omnium, scheduled for June 12-14, is a weekend of road bicycle racing in Glenwood Springs.

There will be a total of three races, including a time trial, a road race and a criterium.

Bike racers from throughout Colorado will be competing in one, or all three, events. Local riders of all ages are encouraged to participate in the races.

This is an American Cycling Association-sanctioned event and part of the Tour of Colorado bike race series.
