Aspen club wins championship

The Pumas of Aspen are champions.

Extended into a shootout after playing to a 1-all overtime tie by the Football Club of Littleton Gold in Sunday’s Men’s Gold Division championship game of the weekend-long Colorado Mountain Cup tournament, the Pumas took home the crown on a penalty kick for the title.

The Pumas advanced to the championship game with a semifinal victory over the Saprissa football club of Denver earlier.

The Aspen-based club was the only area team to win a title at the fifth annual adult soccer tournament which concluded play at Gates Soccer Field on Sunday.

But, the Football Club of Littleton didn’t come away from the tournament empty-handed.

The FC Littleton Fire, earned the Women’s Open division title by going 3-0 in the tournament, which included a 2-1 win over another FC of Littleton women’s team ” The Fury.

Denver’s Predator Pigs captured the women’s 25 and-under tournament, winning three games by shutout, along with a 1-1 tie against tournament runner-up Dos Chaos.

The Men’s Silver Division championship was taken on a 4-3 shootout win by the Americans from Denver over the Fort Collins Monarchs.

Twenty one adult soccer teams participated in the tournament.
