Aspen falls to Eaton in third-place game

FORT COLLINS ” In an overtime battle, Aspen lost to Eaton 54-51 in the third-place Class 3A boys state tournament basketball game on Saturday.

Aspen (23-4) was up by as much as 11 in the second half, but Eaton rallied back to tie the game at 45 and send it to overtime.

Eaton, last year’s state champion, hit two 3-pointers to start out OT and Aspen’s OT shots weren’t falling. The Reds hit some key free throws in the closing seconds to seal the deal.



It was the last high school game for Skier star Cory Parker, who will be going to Drake next year to play basketball for the Bulldogs.

In other 3A tourney action, Kent Denver, who knocked Roaring Fork out of the tournament, beat Valley 65-55 in overtime to take the consolation championship.



After losing in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament in Fort Collins on Thursday, the Basalt girls basketball team rebounded with two wins to take the consolation championship.

First the Longhorns beat Ellicott 54-49 on Friday, then finished with a 62-56 victory over Buena Vista on Saturday morning.

The game was close through the first half against Buena Vista before Longhorns Emily Peetz and Katherine Fitzpatrick drained key 3-pointers to help Basalt (23-4) pull away.

Fitzpatrick finished with 15 points, while Peetz had 13.
