Aspen holds off CRMS, 1-0

ASPEN – Freshman midfielder Julia Hassall was credited with the only goal of the game – a direct-kick that deflected off a defender and into the net – and the Aspen High girls soccer team escaped with a win over Colorado Rocky Mountain School Thursday afternoon at the AHS field.Coupled with a 3-1 victory against Roaring Fork on Tuesday, the AHS girls are now undefeated, 2-0, at home.Junior goalie Carly Magill recorded the shutout in goal for Aspen.”We’re starting to mature a bit, and that’s starting to show,” said Aspen coach Dave Comfort. “Earlier, we probably would’ve conceded one (goal), but today we were able to shut them down.”Hassall’s goal came midway through the first half. An Aspen player drew a whistle for a trip just outside the CRMS goalie box, and Hassall’s free kick appeared headed toward the waiting gloves of the CRMS goalie. But a defender got a foot on the ball, directing it to the right post and in.Aspen improved to 5-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Class 3A Western Slope League play, while CRMS dropped to 4-3 in league and overall.At 6-0 in league, Basalt remains the top team in the standings. Aspen is holding on to the No. 2 position, followed by CRMS.”Our season’s going very well,” said CRMS coach Amanda Leahy. “We split with these guys, we split with Vail (Mountain), and we won two against Rangely. We’re happy with how we’re playing.”CRMS hosts Roaring Fork on Saturday.
