Babler, Matthies lead Bears past Sailors

The point production of Rifle’s Kendall Babler and Montanah Matthies equaled that of the entire Steamboat Springs basketball team Saturday night at Rifle High School.In the Sailors’ defense, the duo had a big night.Babler exploded for 29 points, and Matthies added 20 as the Bears used a big second quarter to upend league foe Steamboat Springs 67-49.Along with the scoring, Babler and Matthies also pulled down 13 and 12 rebounds, respectively.Rifle didn’t get off to a great start, possibly still feeling the sting of its first league loss, Friday night against Moffat County.Steamboat jumped out to a 20-14 lead in the first quarter, but the Bears more than made up for it in the second stanza. Rifle outscored Steamboat 19-4 to take a 33-24 lead, and built on the advantage through the second half.Rifle improved to 6-1 in the Western Slope League (13-2 overall). Steamboat falls to 4-3 (6-9).Rifle faces league rival Glenwood Springs on the Road at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
