Barracudas boost numbers at state

RANGELY – Bring on the state championships. The Sopris Barracudas padded their representation at the upcoming Junior Olympics state swim championships (JOs) with solid performances at the July 20-22 Western Slope Regional. Entering the meet, only 11-year-old Jack Cassidy (200-yard breaststroke) and a boys 9- and 10-year-old relay team (Zeb Thorsen, Michael Wirth, Sebastian Joly and Devyn Mote) had punched their tickets to state, which begins on Thursday, at Lincoln Park Pool in Grand Junction. By the end of Western Slopes – held in Rangely – the Barracudas had qualified a few more.Keevyn Scholl, 13, will compete in the 100 breast in Junction on the heels of a qualifying swim in Rangely. She and Cassidy are the only two individual qualifiers. Another relay team – the girls 13-14 400 medley group of Clara Thorsen (backstroke), Scholl (breaststroke), Kelly Cassidy (butterfly) and Savannah Pearson (freestyle) – qualified for state but won’t be there because of vacationing swimmers. The same went for the girls 9-10 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay teams, which also featured too many vacationing competitors to successfully field a squad. Both teams are composed of Jessica Tuttle, Maddi Peltzman, Mariela Martinez and Charlie Mechling.Sopris finished seventh in the combined team standings, sixth in the girls team fray and ninth in the boys rankings.
