Barracudas prep for regional meet

Staff ReportWith one weekend left before participating at the Western Slope Championship meet, the Sopris Barracudas youth swim team’s marks are on target for a strong showing in Durango.At the Craig Open last weekend Barracuda swimmers posted 47 top-four times and had 18 first-place marks.Emily McDonald, 15, swimming in the Senior girls division, earned the most blue ribbons for the local swim club with six winning times.The Glenwood Springs sophomore-to-be led a Barracuda one-two-three sweep of the 100-meter freestyle with an event-best 1 minute, .90 second time and helped Sopris post a one-two-four finish in the 200 freestyle.Teammate Jennifer Betts, the 100 free runner-up, also clocked second-place times in the 200 and 400-meter individual medley. In the younger age divisions, Clara Thorsen, 11, took first in the 50 and 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley events for 11-12 year-old girls.Allison Schaiberger, Keevyn Scholl and Lily Thorsen also had first-place marks in the girls meet for the Barracudas.Three Sopris swimmers – Charles Quinn, Jonathan Jay and Hansen Nordsiek – swam to first place times in the boys meet.The Barracudas conclude the regular season this weekend with a meet in Montrose.
