Barracudas set to swim

The combination of Strawberries and chlorine usually don’t mix. But, in this case, the pairing of the two works.

Both will be in abundance when 14 youth swim teams, consisting of more than 300 participants, converge this weekend at the John Fleet Municipal Pool in Carbondale for the 32nd annual Sopris Barracudas Invitational Meet.

The meet features teams from across the Western Slope.

Teams scheduled to appear along with the Barracudas include squads from Rifle, Steamboat Springs, Durango, Cortez, Montrose, Rangely, Meeker, Delta, Gunnison, Cortez and Grand Junction.

The meet starts at 6 p.m., Friday evening with the 800-yard freestyle event, then resumes at 8 a.m. on Saturday and continues through Sunday with a both days boasting a full schedule of events.

In the span of those three days, 98 separate events will take place. Events include competition in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and medley swims for boys and girls, ranging from 8 years and under to seniors (15 and above).

Admission to the event is free, but the meet serves as a fund-raiser for the local swim club. A number of area businesses and restaurants have donated items that will be auctioned off as gift baskets. Additionally, the Carbondale Lions Club will be cooking a pancake breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings as part of the festivities.
