Basalt boys can’t get by Skier squad

BASALT – Nick Farrell and Phil Salazar tallied 18 and 16 points, respectively to lead the Aspen Skiers boys’ basketball team to a 71-56 victory over Basalt at Basalt High School Saturday night.

Aspen held a six-point lead at the half, but outscored the Longhorns 18-8 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Kyle Kappeli led Basalt with 16 points, while Travis Schwan and Ryan Thompson added 15 and 13, respectively, in the losing effort.



Aspen improves to 4-1 in Western Slope League play (7-3 overall). Basalt drops to 2-3 (2-7).

HOTCHKISS – After giving up 18 points in the first quarter, the Roaring Fork High School boys’ basketball team’s defense clamped down and allowed just 23 points the rest of the game as the Rams downed Hotchkiss 58-41 in 3A Western Slope League play Friday.

Nic Lough led all scorers with 19 points for the Rams, while teammate Dan Markoya chipped in 15. Nathan Wood and Michael Smith notched 13 and 11 points, respectively for Hotchkiss.

CEDAREDGE – Cedaredge jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, downing 3A Western Slope League foe Basalt 69-48 in high school boys’ basketball Friday night.

Cedaredge built a 24-8 lead in the first quarter and added to the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Longhorns 17-8.

Ryan Thompson and Kyle Kappeli paced Basalt in the losing effort with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Cedaredge’s Jeff Hajny led all scorers with 20 points.

HOTCHKISS – It took a quarter to get rolling, but the Roaring Fork Rams girls’ basketball team’s offense got in gear in plenty of time to defeat Hotchkiss 81-63 in 3A Western Slope league play here Friday night.

The Rams recovered from a 24-13 first-quarter deficit thanks to 30 points – including four treys – from guard Carly Velasquez.

Tarn Udall, Jessi Rochel and Ashley Jensen each scored 15 points for the Rams.

Amy Lacey led Hotchkiss with 19 points, Christa Hawk and Rachel Schmucker tallied 15 and 10, respectively.
