Basalt falls to Faith Christian
BASALT ” If this were boxing rather than soccer, the outcome of Basalt’s 4-3 defeat to Denver Faith Christian would have been a split decision.
The 1-1 (1-0 Western Slope League) Longhorns, with six starters out due to start of spring break ,were at a disadvantage going into Saturday’s nonleague game against the Metro League Eagles.
Basalt, however, gave Faith Christian a stern test.
Brittany Gueglielmo on a pass from teammate Shannon Hutton scored in the 15th minute and Ukare Sano converted a feed by Sophie Stevestadvold for a 2-all tie at intermission.
Ashley Eaton converted a direct free kick for Basalt’s only goal in the second half as the Eagles pulled away for the win.
In split action, Longhorn goalkeepers Darbi Scherer and Autumn Caughern made 11 saves between them.
“We gave them a good run,” said Basalt coach Chris Woods. “It just wasn’t our day.”
Marissa Ranburger scored twice for the victorious Eagles. Kathline Paulson notched a goal and assisted on another score.
Faith Christian also had two goalies in the nets on Saturday.
First-half starter Kristie Zevberger had five saves while allowing two goals. Backup keeper recorded three saves and gave up Eaton’s goal in the second half.
The Longhorns are off until April 3 when they resume WSL play with a home match against Eagle Valley.
Basalt’s match with Olathe on March 30 has been eliminated from the schedule due to Olathe’s not being able to field a varsity-level team this season.
Basalt opened the 2004 campaign with a 4-0 shutout win over league opponent Vail Mountain School on March 16.
