Basalt girls whip Gunnison, 61-32; boys lose

BASALT ” Lauren Redfern scored 19 points and Deanna Spracher had 11 as No. 1 seed Basalt (17-3) defeated eighth-seeded Gunnison (2-18), 61-32, in a Class 3A, District 2 first-round girls basketball tournament match here Tuesday.

After taking a slim 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Longhorns rocketed to a 26-14 halftime advantage, then upped their lead to 18 points by the third quarter.

The win advances Basalt to one of two district semifinal games to be played at Rifle High School on Friday evening. The Longhorns will play Eagle Valley at 8 p.m.

On Tuesday, the No. 4-seeded Devils advanced to the semifinals on a 56-38 win over Aspen.

The other semifinal pits No. 1 Roaring Fork against No. 3 Cedaredge at 6:30 p.m.

Elimination-round games feature Olathe against Hotchkiss at 3:30 p.m. At 5 p.m. Aspen plays Gunnison.

In the boys District 2 tournament, Basalt falls to the elimination bracket after taking a 45-41 loss at Aspen.

The boys tournament resumes Thursday at Rifle High School with four scheduled games.

Action starts at 3:30 p.m. with the Hotchkiss-Basalt elimination game followed by another elimination-bracket contest at 5 p.m. pitting Olathe and Cedaredge.

Semifinal games begin at 6:30 p.m. when No. 2 Eagle Valley takes on No. 3 Aspen followed by the Roaring Fork-Gunnison game at 8 p.m.

The Class 4A, District 7 boys and girls tournaments open Thursday with games at Palisade and Grand Junction Central High Schools.

In the boys tournament, area teams Rifle and Glenwood Springs are at two different venues.

The fifth-seeded Bears face No. 3 Moffat County at 4:45 p.m. at Palisade High School.

Glenwood Springs, the No. 7 seed plays No. 2 Montezuma-Cortez at 8:15 p.m. at Grand Junction Central High School.

In girls tournament action, No. 1-seeded Rifle faces the winner of Tuesday’s Delta-Battle Mountain pigtail game at 3 p.m. at Palisade High School.

The results from the pigtail game were unavailable at press time.

At 6:30 p.m. at Grand Junction Central High School, Glenwood Springs, the No. 4 seed takes on No. 5 Montezuma-Cortez.

The Class 2A, District 5 boys and girls basketball tournaments resume on Friday at Grand Valley High School with semifinal contests in both tournaments.

The Cardinal girls take on No. 6 Hayden at 6:30 p.m., Friday, followed by the boys game against Paonia at 8:15 p.m.

Semifinal winners advance to Saturday’s championship games at 1 and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
