Basalt ready for rematch with DC

Familiarity will be on the side of both teams when Basalt (13-3-0) hosts Denver Christian (11-1-4) at 4 p.m. today in a Class 3A girls soccer quarterfinal game at BHS.Basalt was shutout 3-0 in the last meeting between the two schools on April 9. It was the only time an opponent held them scoreless all season.Longhorns sophomore Katie Staerkel, who netted 30 goals in the regular season, is the Class 3A leading scorer, according to Rocky Preps statistics.Teammates Maddie Hoffman and Jessi Graf also finished the regular season in double figures with 17 and 11 goals scored, respectively.Forward Chrissy West led Denver Christian with eight goals. Michelle Koele and Lindsay Landhuis had six goals each prior to the Crusaders’ 4-1 upset win over No. 5 seed Colorado Springs St. Mary’s to advance them to today’s match.Basalt opened the postseason with a 2-1 win against Bishop Machebeuf on May 11. Today’s winner advances to the 7 p.m. game of a 3A semifinals doubleheader May 20 at the North Area Athletic Complex in Aurora.
