Basalt U12s capture lone area crown

Staff Report

The Basalt Rapids U12 Boys soccer team is No. 1.

The local soccer team earned that distinction by winning the U12 division team championship at this weekend’s annual Glenwood Invitational Tournament at Gates Soccer Park.

Basalt secured the title with a 4-2 win over the Eagle Valley Cyclones in Sunday’s championship game.

Forward Craig Riggins had a hat trick, scoring three of the Rapids’ four goals in the contest.

Cole Greensmith scored the game-winning goal early in the second half.

The goal broke a 2-all halftime tie.

Earlier, Riggins had given Basalt the lead, only to see Eagle Valley respond by tying the score.

After Greensmith’s score, Riggins floated home an insurance goal to the far post with 10 minutes left in the contest.

Basalt advanced to the tournament championship game on wins over the Denver Warriors, New Castle Wizards and the BC Force.

More than 500 players, representing 44 youth soccer teams participated in the two-day tournament.
