Basalt wins Delta golf tourney; Glenwood third

The Demons are coming home with good feelings after Wednesday’s prep boys golf tournament in Delta.With their next scheduled event on tap Friday on “The Hill” at Glenwood Springs Golf Club’s course in West Glenwood, the team is seeking to lower the third-place mark of 242 they carded on Devil’s Thumb Golf Course.Basalt, for the second time in three days, won the team championship coming in at 236, besting runner-up Steamboat by one stroke. The Longhorns won Monday’s tour event at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale.Rifle, with a team score of 253, took fifth place. Roaring Fork was 14th. Grand Valley and Coal Ridge ended in 16th and 17th place, respectively. Glenwood’s Jason Whiting concluded Wednesday’s event in a second-place tie at 77 with Steamboat Springs’ Paul Berry to earn him the lowest score among area golfers.Teammate Cody Nelson also finished among the top 10 at 81. The score earned him an eighth-place tie with Matt Butler of Aspen.Basalt’s Jim Knous continued his torrid pace on the links. The Longhorn junior won his second individual medal in as many tournaments with a 74.Grand Valley sophomore Colton Cowan shot a team-best individual mark of 82 for the Cardinals to place him in a tie for 10th place with five other golfers.Rifle’s top three players – Shawn Cruse, Mike Sours and Brandon Forney – all shot in the low-to-mid 80s. Bryce Faulkner, with a 98, was the lone Coal Ridge Titan to break 100.
