Basketball’s regular season ends this weekend

The final weekend of regular season high school basketball will feature a number of key games in the 3A and 4A Western Slope leagues.

Glenwood Springs will conclude the 4A regular season with weekend games against Delta and Palisade.

On Friday night, the Glenwood Springs boys will travel to Delta while the Glenwood girls will host the Panthers at the GSHS gym (7:30 p.m. varsity start).

Then on Saturday, Glenwood Springs will host Palisade in a girls/boys varsity doubleheader. Game times are 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys.

At stake, of course, are seeding positions for next week’s District Tournament.

The Rifle teams will face Palisade and Delta in reverse order.

The Rifle girls will play at Palisade on Friday along with the boys.

Then on Saturday, the Rifle girls will host Delta and the Rifle boys also will host Delta.

For the Rifle boys, first place in the 4A WSL is on the line as the Bears (8-2) lead Battle Mountain (7-3), Steamboat (7-4) and Delta (6-4).

The Rifle girls are currently second to Moffat County in the Western Slope League.

Roaring Fork’s teams will conclude the 3A Western Slope League season on Friday night when Paonia visits Carbondale for girls and boys games.

Varsity action is set to start at 6:30 p.m. Friday with the girls. The boys varsity will follow.

After games this weekend, the 3A Western Slope League will head into District Tournament play for all 11 teams.

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, pigtail games will be played at the home sites with No. 8 hosting No. 9, No. 6, No. 7 hosting No. 10, and No. 6 hosting No. 11 – on both the girls and boys sides.

Those winners advance to join seeds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the full-bracket tournament set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

On Thursday, Feb. 28, the girls games will be played at Rifle High School while the boys games will be played at Palisade High School.

The same format will follow on Friday, March 1.

Then on Saturday, March 2, the championship and third-place games for both girls and boys will be played at Palisade.

In 4A, the pigtail games will be played on Tuesday, Feb. 26. There will be one pigtail among the girls and one for the boys.

The boys game likely will have Glenwood Springs playing at Palisade.. And the girls game likely will sent Battle Mountain to Delta.

The 4A full bracket then will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-March 2) at Mesa State College in Grand Junction and at a Grand Junction-area high school (Grand Junction, Central, Fruita Monument).
