Battle Mountain’s Brown masters Battlement

Post Independent staff report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

Cameron Brown ruled Battlement Mesa Golf Club on Thursday, shooting a 5-under-par 67 to blitz the field at Grand Valley High School’s home boys golf tournament – the season opener for most Western Slope schools.

The Battle Mountain senior outshot his nearest competition by some nine strokes.

Montrose’s Drew Trujillo and Steamboat Springs’ Kaelen Gunderson each carded 76s, with Trujillo officially nabbing second place by way of a scorecard playoff.

“I didn’t get to watch him play, but the other coaches say he’s that good,” said Grand Valley coach Scott Carpenter, marveling at Brown’s microscopic score. “That’s the lowest score I’ve seen in my two years as coach. … Five-under-par’s pretty impressive.”

Carpenter saw a pair of his players post marks in the mid-80s, with Dylan Walters and Jeremy Lawrence each producing 84s.

Roaring Fork’s Arick Zeigel shot an 82 to lead his team, while Michael Braklow led Glenwood Springs with an 85. Rifle’s Hunter Finger and Jacob Withee both shot 88s to lead the Bears and Casey Lawrence’s 88 paced Coal Ridge.
