Bears can’t keep lead
GRAND JUNCTION – Alex Carlson scored 18 points, Willow Peppel added 14 and Grand Junction Central outscored Rifle 17-11 in the fourth quarter for a 56-51 non-league girls basketball win here Tuesday night.
After trailing throughout the first half, the 3-3 Bears took a one-point, 40-39 lead toward the end of the third quarter before the host Warriors’ final run in the game’s final eight minutes.
Sophomore guard Kristen Neffendorf scored a team-high 13 points, which included four, 3-point field goals for the Bears. Senior Ashley Gavito added 12 points, and got additional scoring from Nicole Erpstead, Julie McWilliams and Krista Wagstrom, who scored eight and six points each, respectively.
Rifle begins league play on Friday at home against Delta, then concludes the first week of play back from the state-mandated holiday break at Palisade on Saturday.
