Bears, Demons capture league kudos

Four area seniors wrapped up their final prep baseball season with Class 4A first-team all-Western Slope League accolades, the league announced recently. A few others will have a chance to repeat next year.

Three of Rifle’s five first-team selections were seniors, while one of two selections from Glenwood Springs was also a senior.For Rifle, seniors Matt Jones, Adam Krick and Brandon Leuallen were joined by juniors Bryce Enewold and Eli Snead on the first team.Krick, a shortstop, was the top hitter on the Bears team, with a .492 average to go along with 18 RBIs. Leuallen and Jones supplied a powerful 1-2 punch from the mound for the Bears. Leuallen finished the season with an 8-1 record and a team-low 2.37 ERA, while racking up 33 strikeouts in 44 1-3 innings. Jones was 4-2 on the season with a 2.63 ERA.Glenwood center fielder Taylor Wilde finished up the season with a sparkling average of .532 and was joined on the first team by sophomore pitcher/infieder Beau Chicoine on the first team. Chicoine, who finished the season batting .500 and had a team-low 3.46 ERA with 34 strikeouts, was one of only three sophomores or freshmen selected to the 20-player first team.

The Bears and Demons also each had a player earn honorable-mention honors in Rifle junior first baseman Uriel Quezada and Glenwood senior pitcher/infielder John Faris.Senior Chris Rider was named player of the year as one of five first-team selections for league-champion Delta. Delta’s Steve Reiher captured coach-of-the-year kudos.
