Bears name ’02 football captains

The Rifle Bears are ready for football, more than ready.

This week the captains for the 2002 Rifle football team were announced.

And, according to head coach Darrel Gorham, the Bears ready for summer weight work and summer football camps.

“We’re really excited about this year. We’ve got a lot of kids coming back and a lot of younger kids,” Gorham said.

He said the Bears will take a record 51 players to the Wyoming Football Camps this summer.

“That’s the most we’ve ever taken up there,” said Gorham, the head coach at Rifle for the past 12 seasons.

“These guys want to get back (to state) and get over the hump and get into a state championship game,” Gorham said of the Bears, who have been playoff regulars for the past decade.

Gorham also announced that the Bears will field five captains next season. Their leadership will be invaluable, he said, adding that the team hasn’t had five captains in quite some time.

The senior captains, Gorham said, are Ryan Gilbert, Tony Allen, Jason Enewold, Anthony Alfini and Owen Madison.

Gilbert is a returning starter on the offensive and defensive lines.

Allen also is an experienced lineman in the Bears’ program.

Enewold will start at quarterback and return to his safety position next season.

Alfini, a starting linebacker, also will return this year. He also will see duty on the offensive line.

Madison rounds out the group with his outstanding leadership characteristics, Gorham said.
