Bears’ rally falls short vs. Huskies

RIFLE — Rifle High School’s summer baseball team had a late rally going in the bottom of the seventh inning against Battle Mountain before falling to the Huskies, 6-3, on the second day of the Rifle Midsummer Tournament at Cooper Field on Friday night.

Bryer Rew’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning cut the Bears’ deficit to three runs before the Huskies halted Rifle’s rally attempt.

Rifle coach Troy Phillips complimented the defensive play of second baseman Ty Leyba, who Phillips credited for making several stellar plays in the field. Also for Rifle, Drake Montgomery had a pair of hits and James Magnuson added a base hit.

Also playing on Friday was Glenwood Springs, which fell 12-2 against Steamboat Springs.

Rifle finishes tournament play at 4 p.m. today against Conifer, followed by a 7 p.m. game against Glenwood.
