Bears, Rams take league wins

PALISADE – Fresh off a huge performance against Delta, Ryan Shideler lit Palisade up for 25 points in a 60-45 victory on Saturday.

The win was the second Western Slope League for the Bears in as many nights.

Rifle opened up a six-point lead with 3:11 left in the third after Shideler’s three-point-play with a field goal and successful free throw after a Palisade personal foul.



The Bears’ lead rose to 12 at the end of the quarter on Zack Akin’s basket.

Defensively, Rifle limited Palisade to 18 points in the second half.



The victory moved Rifle to 2-0 against the Western Slope League and 4-4 overall.

OLATHE – A short road trip netted league wins for the Roaring Fork boys and girls basketball teams here Saturday.

Four Rams, led by Aaron Markham’s 21 points, scored in double-figures in Roaring Fork’s 78-44 victory over the Pirate boys.

Roaring Fork took a 28-7 lead in the first quarter and outscored Olathe in three of the contest’s four quarters.

Nic Lough added 18, Misael Fernandez scored 12 points and Dan Markoya finished with 11.

The victory evens Roaring Fork’s season record at 4-4 and 2-1 in the Class 3A Western Slope League.

GIRLS

OLATHE 49

Ashley Jensen scored a varsity career-high 23 points and Carly Velasquez added 16 as the Rams coasted to their second straight WSL win in as many nights.

Roaring Fork (2-1 in the WSL, 6-2 overall) pulled out to a 35-20 lead at halftime and were leading by as many as 20 points.

Ram senior Brie Bath finished with 12 points. Pearl Roberts led Olathe with 11.

Both teams have back-to-back WSL games scheduled this weekend, starting with Friday’s contest at Hotchkiss.

The Rams return to Carbondale Saturday for a girls/boys doubleheader with Gunnison.
